Marsha, Marsha, Marsha…brush your hair!

Here comes a bit of a rant…

I work in the alternative hair industry and part of what I do is to find out how the end consumer is caring for their product. Why do I do this? We are constantly trying to change the conversation that is being had about care and maintenance. In some cases we are trying to get that conversation to happen in the first place. As professionals, it is our responsibility to educate and guide the consumer on how to be successful and enjoy their purchase, if you aren’t doing that who is?

Well, let me tell you…

Other end consumers, and guess what? They are doing it wrong…

I hear all the time that the hair is tangling and so it must be defective. Really? Defective? So if you had biological hair you never had to brush your hair? If was just always perfect? I call bullshit! BRUSH YOUR ALTERNATIVE HAIR!

I took a beautiful wig and destroyed it because I wanted to see what would happen if for two days I wore it without brushing it. Shocker, I ruined the piece. Even after I brushed it on day three it became a mess. The damage was done. The way to save it and bring it back from the hair grave was to do a deep conditioning treatment on it and brush it throughout the day.

Let me break this down.

Alternative human hair is processed hair, it is not processed the same way your biological hair is colored or treated in a salon and so you must care for it differently. There is a reason you do not see many platinum blondes running around on the street with long hair half way down their back. If you color your hair and lighten your hair it becomes more fragile. You have to take the time to care for it.

If this is all news to you and no one ever told you about this important fact of alternative, then I am truly sorry. With everything else going on in your life it can be hard to have to deal with a wig, so here is the truth beneath it. It is more work and it does take time, and if you do it right it will be beautiful and not a tangled mess and a huge waste of money.
